The Piedmont Pet Pantry is a pet food bank that provides temporary assistance to those needing help feeding their dogs and cats. Assistance is available monthly and is limited to four dogs and four cats per household. The pet pantry is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity. Volunteers donate their time, organizational skills, vehicles, and fuel to pick up donated food, take it to distribution events, give food to those in need, and track the inflow and outflow of food. We are always in need of dog and cat food donations as well as tax-deductible charitable donations.
The Piedmont Pet Pantry partners with the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry in Charlottesville, VIrginia and the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center in Lovingston, Virginia to distribute dog and cat food to companion animal guardians. This assistance allows families to keep their pets in their loving homes instead of relinquishing them to local shelters because they can't afford to purchase pet food.
The number of families needing help from the pet pantry increases each month. The current average monthly distribution of pet food is 3,100 pounds of food to 180 families for 800 pets. On the days the Piedmont Pet Pantry distributes pet food at the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, 42.3% of the families requesting USDA food also request dog and/or cat food.
The PIedmont Pet Pantry is a project of the Extra Mile Dog Rescue. Learn about the dog rescue at www.extramiledogrescue.org.
